BD Vacutainer® Serumseparationsrör SST™ II Advance

Transfer the serum, plasma or whole blood to a plastic transport tube (see Pediatric Specimen Tubes below). To prevent injury and exposure to potentially infectious material, do not ship frozen serum, plasma, or whole blood received in glass tubes or SST (glass or plastic). Serum is the liquid fraction of whole blood that is collected after the blood is allowed to clot. The clot is removed by centrifugation and the resulting supernatant, designated serum, is carefully removed using a Pasteur pipette. Plasma is produced when whole blood is collected in tubes that are treated with an anticoagulant. BD Vacutainer® SST™ Tubes contain spray-coated silica to aid in clotting and a polymer gel for serum separation.

The SST contains gel that moves between to separate the blood cells and serum during the centrifugation process. Prevents the contamination of the serum from the separated cellular components. BD Vacutainer™ SST™ II Advance Tubes feature an inert, stable gel that separates the serum and the blood clot during centrifugation. The type of gel used enables short centrifugation times.
